Hartree-Fock Theory of Skyrmions in Quantum Hall Ferromagnets

چکیده
We report on a study of the charged-skyrmion or spin-texture excitations which occur in quantum Hall ferromagnets near odd Landau level filling factors. Particle-hole symmetry is used to relate the spin-quantum numbers of charged particle and hole excitations and neutral particle-hole pair excitations. Hartree-Fock theory is used to provide quantitative estimates of the energies of these excitations and their dependence on Zeeman coupling strength, Landau level quantum numbers, and the thicknesses of the two-dimensional electron layers. For the case of ν near three we suggest the possibility of first order phase transitions with increasing Zeeman coupling strength from a many

Bag Formation in Quantum Hall Ferromagnets
Charged skyrmions or spin–textures in the quantum Hall ferromagnet at filling factor ν = 1 are reinvestigated using the Hartree–Fock method in the lowest Landau level approximation. It is shown that the single Slater determinant with the minimum energy in the unit charge sector is always of the hedgehog form. It is observed that the magnetization vector’s length deviates locally from unity, i.e...
متن کامل2 00 1 Effective action for quantum Hall skyrmions
Recently, an O(3) type of effective action was presented for the quantum Hall ferromagnet, which accounts for bag formation observed in microscopic Hartree-Fock calculations. We apply this action in the soliton sector and compare with Hartree-Fock results. We find good agreement over the whole parameter range where skyrmions exist. The standard minimal O(3) model cannot explain the bag and has ...
متن کاملPseudospin Quantum Hall Ferromagnetism
Symmetry breaking ground states occur in quantum Hall effect (QHE) systems when two or more Landau levels become degenerate near the Fermi level. Isotropic, easy-axis or easy plane quantum Hall ferromagnets (QHF) can form depending on the pseudospins of the involved Landau levels consisting of real spin, orbit radius quantum number, subband index or growth direction. Theories based on Hartree-F...
متن کاملPseudospin vortex-antivortex states with interwoven spin textures in double layer quantum Hall systems
Recent experiments on strongly correlated bilayer quantum Hall systems strongly suggest that, contrary to the usual assumption, the electron spin degree of freedom is not completely frozen either in the quantum Hall or in the compressibles states that occur at filling factor ν = 1. These experiments imply that the quasiparticles at ν = 1 could have both spin and pseudospin textures i.e. they co...
متن کاملSkyrmions and Quantum Hall Ferromagnets in Improved Composite-Boson Theory
An improved composite-boson theory of quantum Hall ferromagnets is proposed. It is tightly related with the microscopic wave-function theory. The characteristic feature is that the field operator describes solely the physical degrees of freedom representing the deviation from the ground state. It presents a powerful tool to analyze excited states within the lowest Landau level. Excitations incl...
